Smeg Emerald Green 24cm Non-Stick Casserole Pan
Smeg makes the casserole in two shapes and they are not interchangeable. This is the low-sided one: 24cm across, 5.4 litres, wide enough that a stew reduces properly rather than steaming. The higher-sided 26cm version holds 7.7 litres and is the one to take if you cook for six or braise big cuts. Both come with a tempered glass lid and a stainless steel rim, both take the oven to 250°C, and both sit on a cold-forged aluminium body with a stainless base.
The coating is the reason to buy this range. Smeg’s Cookware line uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals, rather than the PTFE coating most non-stick pans at this price still use. It is oven safe to 250°C and dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps any ceramic surface sharper for longer. The 50s Style pieces in red use a three-layer PTFE coating instead, so check which line you are buying if that matters to you.
