Smeg Cookware

Smeg’s cookware is cold-forged aluminium on a bonded stainless base, with a patented radiant bottom that spreads heat out from the ring instead of leaving a hot spot in the middle. Every piece takes induction, gas, ceramic and solid electric, goes into the oven to 250°C and comes out of the dishwasher, with polished AISI304 stainless handles. Twenty-six pieces here, all below Smeg South Africa list price.

Check the coating before you buy – the two lines are different. The Cookware line in black, cream and emerald green uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals. The 50s Style line in red uses a three-layer PTFE non-stick, the same chemistry as most non-stick pans. Both perform well and both are oven and dishwasher safe; if PFAS-free matters to you, buy black, cream or emerald green. Almost nobody selling Smeg cookware in South Africa spells this out, so we do.

Frying pan, deep pan or casserole? The frying pans have low flared sides so a spatula slides under an egg. In the Cookware line: 20cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,400, 24cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,500 and 28cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,750. In 50s Style red: Red 24cm at R1,400 and Red 30cm at R1,650. The 28cm deep pan at R2,450 has the same wide base with taller sides and a tempered glass lid, so you brown on the hob and finish in the oven at 250°C: Black, Cream, Emerald Green.

Casseroles come in two shapes and they are not interchangeable. The low-sided 24cm holds 5.4 litres and is the one for anything you want to reduce rather than steam – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, R2,450 each. The high-sided 26cm holds 7.7 litres and is the one for a braise or a stew for six: Red in 50s Style red, R2,450.

Saucepan and wok. The 20cm saucepan is 3.1 litres with a long handle and a tempered glass lid, the everyday pot – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, R2,050. The 30cm wok is 6.6 litres with a flat stainless base built for a normal hob rather than a wok burner, so it sits flat on induction – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, Black, R2,050. Note that the black 30cm wok comes in both lines: the Cookware version is ceramic, the 50s Style version is PTFE.

Smeg cookware in South Africa: common questions

How much does Smeg cookware cost in South Africa?

Frying pans start at R1,400 for the 20cm against a Smeg South Africa list of R2,299, R1,500 for the 24cm and R1,750 for the 28cm. The 20cm saucepan and the 30cm wok are R2,050 each (list R3,399), and the casseroles and the 28cm deep pan are R2,450 (list R3,999).

Is Smeg cookware PFAS free?

The Cookware line in black, cream and emerald green is. It uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals. The 50s Style line in red uses a three-layer PTFE coating instead, which is the same chemistry as most non-stick pans. If PFAS-free is the reason you are buying, choose black, cream or emerald green.

Is it induction compatible?

Yes, every piece. The body is cold-forged aluminium bonded to a stainless steel base plate, so it works on induction, gas, ceramic and solid electric plates. The patented radiant bottom spreads the heat out from the ring rather than leaving a hot spot in the centre.

Can it go in the oven?

Yes, to 250°C. The handles are polished AISI304 stainless steel and go in with the pan. That is what makes the 28cm deep pan and the casseroles useful - you brown on the hob and finish the dish in the oven without changing dishes.

What is the difference between the 24cm and 26cm casserole?

Shape and capacity. The 24cm is the low-sided one at 5.4 litres, better for anything you want to reduce rather than steam. The 26cm is high-sided at 7.7 litres, better for a braise or a stew for six. Both have a tempered glass lid with a stainless rim.

What is the deep pan for, and how is it different from a frying pan?

The frying pans have low flared sides so a spatula slides under food easily. The 28cm deep pan has the same wide base but taller sides and a glass lid, which makes it the pan for risotto, a one-pan chicken or a curry that needs reducing - anything that starts on the hob and finishes in the oven.

Is Smeg cookware dishwasher safe?

Yes, all of it. Hand washing will keep any ceramic non-stick surface sharper for longer, but the dishwasher will not damage it.
