Smeg Cream 28cm Non-Stick Deep Pan
The deep pan is the piece people miss when they buy a cookware set. It has the wide base of a frying pan but taller sides and a tempered glass lid, so you can brown on the hob and then finish the dish in the oven at up to 250°C without moving it to a dish. Risotto, a one-pan chicken, a curry that needs reducing – this is the pan for anything that starts on the plate and ends in the oven. Cold-forged aluminium on a 0.5mm stainless base plate.
The coating is the reason to buy this range. Smeg’s Cookware line uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals, rather than the PTFE coating most non-stick pans at this price still use. It is oven safe to 250°C and dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps any ceramic surface sharper for longer. The 50s Style pieces in red use a three-layer PTFE coating instead, so check which line you are buying if that matters to you.
