Smeg Black 28cm Non-Stick Frying Pan
The frying pans in this range have deliberately low, flared sides so a spatula slides under an egg or a fillet without fighting the rim, which is the difference between a frying pan and the deep pan next to it. Underneath sits Smeg’s patented radiant base: a stainless plate bonded to cold-forged aluminium that spreads heat out from the ring instead of leaving a hot spot in the middle. The body is cold-forged rather than cast, so it is thicker at the base than a pressed pan and does not warp on a gas flame.
The coating is the reason to buy this range. Smeg’s Cookware line uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals, rather than the PTFE coating most non-stick pans at this price still use. It is oven safe to 250°C and dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps any ceramic surface sharper for longer. The 50s Style pieces in red use a three-layer PTFE coating instead, so check which line you are buying if that matters to you.
