Smeg Espresso Machines

Smeg makes four different kinds of espresso machine and the names do not make the difference obvious, so start here. A manual machine (ECF02, ECF03) takes ground coffee in a portafilter and you dose, tamp and pull the shot yourself. A manual with grinder (EGF03) adds a conical burr grinder and bean hopper on top of that, so you grind fresh into the basket. A bean to cup (BCC12, BCC13) grinds, doses, tamps and brews at one press. The Minipro (EMC02) is the semi-professional machine for people who already know how they like their coffee. All 28 are in stock and priced below Smeg South Africa list.

The one thing worth knowing before you choose. Smeg lists the ECF02 and the ECF03 at the same R8,499, and most South African listings treat them as the same machine. They are not. The ECF03 has a 58mm professional portafilter instead of the 51mm, an integrated pressure gauge, a 1.4 litre tank instead of 1.1, 1480 W instead of 1350 W, and a cold brew function that pulls a single or double dose in under five minutes. At an identical price the ECF03 is the better buy, and we would tell you that even though both sit at R6,899 here.

Bean to cup: BCC12 or BCC13? Same grinder, same 150g hopper, same 1.4 litre tank, same cabinet. The BCC12 at R10,599 gives you seven drink selections and a stainless steam wand you froth milk with yourself. The BCC13 at R11,399 swaps the wand for an automatic milk system with a Tritan bottle and takes you to nine recipes, so a cappuccino is one button. R800 buys you the milk work. If you drink milk coffee every morning it pays for itself in convenience; if you drink espresso black, take the BCC12.

EGF03 with built-in grinder – R12,699 (was R15,499): Black, Cream, Pastel Blue, Pastel Green, Red, White, and in matt Matt Black.

BCC12 bean to cup – R10,599 (was R12,999): Black, Emerald Green, Storm Blue, White. BCC13 bean to cup with milk system – R11,399 (was R13,999): Emerald Green, White. Minipro EMC02 semi-professional – R26,199 (was R31,999): Black, Emerald Green, White. Two collector editions: the Red Salzburg Porsche x Smeg bean to cup, one of 1,970 made, at R28,099, and the Blu Mediterraneo Dolce and Gabbana ECF02 at R23,699.

Smeg espresso machines in South Africa: common questions

How much does a Smeg espresso machine cost in South Africa?

The 50s Style manual machines, ECF02 and ECF03, are R6,899 here against a Smeg South Africa list of R8,499. The EGF03 with a built-in grinder is R12,699 (list R15,499). Bean to cup starts at R10,599 for the BCC12 and R11,399 for the BCC13 with the automatic milk system. The Minipro EMC02 is R26,199 (list R31,999).

What is the difference between the Smeg ECF02 and the ECF03?

Smeg lists both at R8,499 but they are not the same machine. The ECF03 has a 58mm professional portafilter instead of a 51mm filter holder, an integrated pressure gauge, a 1.4 litre tank instead of 1.1, 1480 W instead of 1350 W, and a cold brew function. At the same price the ECF03 is the better machine.

Should I buy the BCC12 or the BCC13 bean to cup?

They share the grinder, the 150g bean hopper, the 1.4 litre tank and the cabinet. The BCC12 has a manual steam wand and seven drink selections. The BCC13 has an automatic milk system with a Tritan bottle and nine recipes, so milk drinks are one button. The BCC13 costs R800 more and is worth it if you drink cappuccinos or lattes daily.

Do Smeg espresso machines froth milk?

Yes. Every manual model has a stainless steam wand, and the BCC12 bean to cup does too. Only the BCC13 froths the milk automatically. The Minipro EMC02 carries a longer professional wand with room for a full frothing jug.

What pressure do they run at?

The manual ECF02, ECF03 and the Minipro run a 15 bar pump. The EGF03 with grinder runs 20 bar on the coffee circuit and 15 bar on the steam circuit. The BCC12 bean to cup runs 19 bar.

Which Smeg espresso machine needs a separate grinder?

The ECF02, ECF03, EMC02 Minipro and the two decorated editions take pre-ground coffee, so you either buy ground or add a grinder. The EGF03 and both bean to cup models grind their own beans. Our Smeg coffee grinders are on the coffee grinder page.

Do you carry a warranty on Smeg machines?

Sadec Online Shoppers is an independent retailer, not an authorised Smeg agent. Every machine carries the six-month statutory warranty every South African seller owes you under section 56 of the Consumer Protection Act, and we handle it directly. Stock is genuine Smeg, never a replica.
