The big Fieldbar is the 24L Gin Trunk. It is the largest box Fieldbar makes: 32 standing 440ml cans or ten 750ml wine bottles upright, ice for up to 50 hours, 4.9kg empty. Nine colourways from R3,750 at Sadec against a R4,999 recommended retail, delivered free anywhere in South Africa.
Nobody walks into a shop asking for a 24-litre hard cooler. They ask for the big one. This is a page about the big one: what it is called, what actually fits inside it, how large it is in the boot of a car, and what it costs.
Why people call it the big Fieldbar
Fieldbar’s own name for it is the Gin Trunk. Most South Africans searching for it do not use that name. They search for the big Fieldbar, the big field bar, the biggest Fieldbar cooler box, or a bar in a box, and all four mean the same product.
The name is not marketing invention either. It is trunk-shaped and deep enough to stand bottles upright, which is the thing that separates it from every other cooler box at this size, where bottles have to lie down and roll around in the melt.
What fits inside the 24L Gin Trunk
| What you are packing | How much fits |
|---|---|
| 440ml cans, standing upright | 32 |
| 750ml wine bottles, standing upright | 10 |
| Ice retention | Up to 50 hours |
| Empty weight | 4.9kg |
| External dimensions | 380 x 450 x 250mm |
Standing upright is the number that matters. Ten bottles of wine standing means you can pack a case for a weekend and still have room around them for ice and tumblers, rather than stacking bottles flat and losing half the volume to air.
Is the Gin Trunk really a bar in a box?
Close enough that the phrase stuck. It is an insulated trunk, not a drinks cabinet: there is no shelf, no glass rack and no bottle opener built into the lid. What it does is hold a full bar’s worth of bottles upright and cold for two days, which is the part people actually want.
Pair it with a Swing Sling if you plan to carry it any distance. At 4.9kg empty and considerably more loaded, the short carry handle is the limiting factor, not the box.

Big Fieldbar or the 10L? A quick way to decide
Buy the 24L if you are packing bottles rather than cans, if the box lives in a vehicle rather than being carried, or if you want one box that covers a weekend for four. Buy the 10L Drinks Box if it is mostly two people and mostly a day.
One detail that decides it for a lot of people: the 10L nests inside the 24L for storage, so owning both costs you one box of cupboard space rather than two. The full size-by-size comparison sits on the Fieldbar range page.
How to tell it is a genuine Fieldbar
Every box carries an individually numbered brass plaque and a five-year warranty. The build is removable zero ozone-depleting foam insulation, an airtight ring gasket, a pressure-lock lid, commercial-grade aluminium hinges and a food-grade BPA-free interior, in a shell that does not sweat. Made by hand in Cape Town.
Common questions about the big Fieldbar
What is the biggest Fieldbar cooler box?
The 24L Gin Trunk. It is roughly two and a half times the volume of the 10L Drinks Box and the largest box in the range.
How many bottles does the 24L Gin Trunk hold?
Ten 750ml wine bottles standing upright, with room around them for ice. In cans it takes 32 standing 440ml cans.
How long does ice last in the Gin Trunk?
Up to 50 hours, the same rating as the 10L Drinks Box. Pre-chilling the box and filling it full both extend it; a half-empty box loses cold faster.
How heavy is it?
4.9kg empty. Loaded with bottles and ice it is a two-hand carry, which is why the shoulder strap is worth having.
Is the Gin Trunk cheaper at Sadec?
Yes. From R3,750 against Fieldbar’s R4,999 recommended retail, with free delivery anywhere in South Africa and no minimum spend.
