Smeg Cookware
Smeg’s cookware is cold-forged aluminium on a bonded stainless base, with a patented radiant bottom that spreads heat out from the ring instead of leaving a hot spot in the middle. Every piece takes induction, gas, ceramic and solid electric, goes into the oven to 250°C and comes out of the dishwasher, with polished AISI304 stainless handles. Twenty-six pieces here, all below Smeg South Africa list price.
Check the coating before you buy – the two lines are different. The Cookware line in black, cream and emerald green uses a ceramic non-stick made without PFAS, nickel or heavy metals. The 50s Style line in red uses a three-layer PTFE non-stick, the same chemistry as most non-stick pans. Both perform well and both are oven and dishwasher safe; if PFAS-free matters to you, buy black, cream or emerald green. Almost nobody selling Smeg cookware in South Africa spells this out, so we do.
Frying pan, deep pan or casserole? The frying pans have low flared sides so a spatula slides under an egg. In the Cookware line: 20cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,400, 24cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,500 and 28cm (Black, Cream, Emerald Green) at R1,750. In 50s Style red: Red 24cm at R1,400 and Red 30cm at R1,650. The 28cm deep pan at R2,450 has the same wide base with taller sides and a tempered glass lid, so you brown on the hob and finish in the oven at 250°C: Black, Cream, Emerald Green.
Casseroles come in two shapes and they are not interchangeable. The low-sided 24cm holds 5.4 litres and is the one for anything you want to reduce rather than steam – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, R2,450 each. The high-sided 26cm holds 7.7 litres and is the one for a braise or a stew for six: Red in 50s Style red, R2,450.
Saucepan and wok. The 20cm saucepan is 3.1 litres with a long handle and a tempered glass lid, the everyday pot – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, R2,050. The 30cm wok is 6.6 litres with a flat stainless base built for a normal hob rather than a wok burner, so it sits flat on induction – Black, Cream, Emerald Green, Black, R2,050. Note that the black 30cm wok comes in both lines: the Cookware version is ceramic, the 50s Style version is PTFE.
